Gender is a complex social construct that shapes identities, roles, and expectations across cultures and throughout history. Unlike biological sex, gender encompasses the behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men, women, and non-binary individuals.

The concept has evolved significantly over centuries. In many ancient societies, gender was understood as fluid rather than rigid—indigenous cultures across the Americas recognised “Two-Spirit” individuals, while South Asian communities acknowledged the Hijra community. The modern understanding of gender as a spectrum, rather than a binary, draws from both historical precedent and contemporary research in psychology, sociology, and neuroscience.

The feminist movements of the 19th and 20th centuries fundamentally reshaped how societies think about gender. From the suffragettes fighting for voting rights to the intersectional feminism of today, each wave has expanded our understanding of how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, and ability.

Today, gender equality remains one of the most pressing social issues globally. The UN's Sustainable Development Goal 5 calls for gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls, yet significant gaps persist in pay, representation, access to education, and freedom from violence. Our club exists to contribute to this ongoing conversation—locally and personally.

Crochet has long been stereotyped as a “grandmother’s hobby”—something feminine, quiet, and unremarkable. This workshop challenges that assumption by introducing crochet as a creative skill open to everyone, regardless of gender.

Film offers a unique window into lived experiences different from our own. This series explores themes of gender, identity, equality, and social expectations through carefully selected films and guided discussion.
